Scripture and Catechism for the Moment of Temptation
“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” — Psalm 119:11 (ESV)
How to Use This Page
This is not a willpower tool. You are not white-knuckling your way through temptation by reciting Bible verses like magic spells. That would be the theology of glory — your effort, your discipline, your strength.
This is a Gospel tool. When the little monster sends its signal and the big monster starts spinning lies, these words cut through the noise. They remind you of what is true — about God, about you, about the trap. They are the Word of God, and the Word of God is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). The Holy Spirit works through this Word. You are not fighting alone.
Read them slowly. Read them out loud if you can — your ears need to hear what your mouth confesses. Let the truth do its work.
Who You Are: Your Baptismal Identity
When the accuser whispers, “This is who you really are — an addict, a slave, a fraud,” answer with what God has declared over you.
“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” — Romans 6:3-4
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” — 1 John 3:1
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” — 1 Peter 2:9
From the Small Catechism — on Baptism:
“What does such baptizing with water indicate? It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise, who shall live before God in righteousness and purity forever.”
Luther’s declaration: “I am baptized.” Not “I was baptized” — the reality is present tense. Say it. Out loud, if you can. “I am baptized.” The old Adam was drowned in that water. He does not get to define you.
The Lie Exposed: Porn Gives You Nothing
When the big monster whispers, “You need this — just this once — it will make you feel better,” answer with the truth about what the trap actually is.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” — John 10:10
“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” — Matthew 16:26
“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything.” — 1 Corinthians 6:12
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world — the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life — is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” — 1 John 2:15-17
“You shall have no other gods before me.” — Exodus 20:3
From the Large Catechism — on the First Commandment:
“Whatever your heart clings to and relies upon, that is your God.”
Ask yourself: what is the big monster promising right now? Comfort? Relief? Excitement? Intimacy? It cannot deliver any of these. It never has. It only creates the void it pretends to fill. The fire hose doesn’t quench your thirst — it drowns out the stream.
God’s Strength, Not Yours
When you feel weak — when the craving is loud and your resolve feels thin — do not reach for willpower. Reach for the One whose strength is made perfect in weakness.
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” — 1 Corinthians 10:13
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” — Galatians 5:1
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalm 23:1
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
From the Small Catechism — the Lord’s Prayer, Sixth Petition:
“Lead us not into temptation. What does this mean? God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice.”
Pray this. Right now, if you are in a moment of temptation. “Lead me not into temptation.” You are asking the Almighty God — who spoke the universe into existence — to deploy His power on your behalf. He hears. He answers.
Against the Accuser
When shame attacks — when the devil says, “You’re too far gone, you’ll never change, God is tired of you” — answer with God’s verdict, not the accuser’s.
“Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died — more than that, who was raised — who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” — Romans 8:33-34
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9
“As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” — Psalm 103:12
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.” — Isaiah 1:18
“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.” — Psalm 103:8-10
“His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22-23
From the Small Catechism — the Apostles’ Creed, Third Article:
“I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.”
Your faith is not your achievement. It is the Holy Spirit’s work. And what the Spirit has begun, He will complete (Philippians 1:6).
The Freedom That Is Already Yours
When the big monster whispers, “You’re missing out — life without porn is grey and joyless,” answer with the truth about the freedom Christ gives.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” — Galatians 5:13
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” — Galatians 5:22-23
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4
“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” — Psalm 16:11
You are not giving up a pleasure. You are escaping a trap. The big monster says freedom is deprivation — that is its final, most desperate lie. The truth is that you were the one deprived. Porn drained color from everything it touched. Freedom brings it back.
Luther’s Morning and Evening Prayers
Pray these daily. They are brief, ancient, and powerful. Notice especially the final petition: “that the evil foe may have no power over me.”
Morning Prayer
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
Evening Prayer
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
In the Moment: A Rapid Response
If you are in a moment of temptation right now and need something immediate, here is what to do:
-
Say out loud: “I am baptized.” Your identity is settled. The old Adam does not get to drive.
-
Pray: “Lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil.” You have just asked Almighty God for help. He heard you.
-
Name the lie: What is the big monster telling you right now? “You need this”? “Just one peek”? “You deserve it”? Name it. Say it out loud: “That is a lie.” Lies collapse when they are spoken into the light.
-
Read one passage above. Any one. Read it slowly, out loud if possible. Let the Word do its work.
-
Walk away from the screen. Physically move. Go to another room. Step outside. The moment will pass — the little monster’s signal is brief and faint. You only need to outlast it, and it is weaker than you think.
-
Remember: You are not giving up anything. There is nothing on that screen that you need, want, or benefit from. The trap is an illusion. The freedom is real. You are free.
“The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.” — Hebrews 4:12
Let it cut.
